From the Beach to the Mountains: A Real Estate Adventure Close to My Heart

Sometimes, the best real estate stories begin with a phone call from a past client and turn into an unexpected adventure!

Not long ago, I received a call from dear past clients of mine who now live in South Carolina. They were ready for a change, and I just couldn't resist saying YES to helping them find their next special place.

For years, they had owned a successful beach investment property. But while the investment had performed well, my friend was ready for something different.

She had poured her heart into that beach home, carefully choosing every pillow, finish, and detail. Then came years of renters, and let's just say the house and all those beautiful pillows had taken quite a beating!

Her husband saw a successful investment. She saw all those pillows! 😂

So, when they started talking about exchanging their beach property for a mountain retreat, they made one thing very clear: This next home would be for family to enjoy, not for renters.

And that's when the fun began!

A Search Through the Mountains of North Carolina

Western North Carolina has always held a special place in my heart. Both of my parents came from the mountains, and I spent much of my childhood there. Growing up, it seemed like every house we passed belonged to a relative!

I also have a second home in Blowing Rock, so the mountains have remained a big part of my life.

But even with all those years of familiarity, this search took me to some places I had never explored before.

We traveled through Highlands, Banner Elk, Cashiers, Weaverville, Asheville, and several other mountain communities, looking for just the right combination of location, setting, and home.

And believe me, we covered some ground!

Then, just when we thought we had seen just about everything, something truly exceptional came on the market in the far western corner of North Carolina, near the Tennessee and Georgia borders.

Ten Acres and a View Worth the Journey

Imagine 10 acres overlooking the Great Smoky Mountains, with a home designed and built by an architect for his own family.

Now, when an architect designs his own home and his wife has a decorator's eye, you can end up with something pretty special!

This property had the kind of setting and character we had been searching for. It wasn't just another mountain house. It was a place where my clients could picture their family gathering, spending time together, and making memories for years to come.

Of course, finding the right property is only part of the process.

My clients carefully weighed their options, and we went back and forth as we worked through the decision. In the end, we were able to negotiate what I believe was an incredible deal, both in timing and price.

And best of all, they found a beautiful mountain retreat to enjoy with the people who matter most.

Why Knowing the Mountains Matters

Here's something I've learned over the years: Buying a mountain property is different from buying a home in the city.

The roads, the communities, the terrain, the views, and the lifestyle all play a part in finding the right property.

And sometimes, the most special places aren't the ones you originally set out to find.

That's why I love helping people explore their options. A good real estate search isn't just about looking at houses. It's about understanding what matters to the people buying them and knowing where to look.

For me, Western North Carolina is more than a real estate market. It's part of who I am.

And getting to share that part of my life with wonderful clients made this adventure even more special.
